Brief history
Around the 8th century b.C. Greeks from the isle of Euboea established the first colony in Ischia: they built the port and the necropolis in the valley before which San Montano Bay opens up, while the acropolis, god´s home, was located on the promontory of Mount Vico in present–day Hotel San Montano estate.
The Greeks were the first to exploit the therapeutic properties of the island´s numerous hot springs. However, even if the Romans did realize how abundant the mineral water was on this little island, it was used for treatment purposes only in 1660 when Jasolino, a native medical doctor, studied the water healing properties on a more organized and scientific basis.
hat was only the beginning of a very intense research activity carried out by outstanding scientists who have shown the unique properties of Ischia´s thermal water.
At present, thermal therapies have been recognized as medical treatment and are performed under the terms and conditions of the Italian Ministry of Health. Thermal support is good for treatment and prevention as well since it helps the body´s immune system to fight off diseases and infections.
